WHAT WE DO

We provide outreach, prevention and educational services to Westside residents who are at-risk of alcohol, substance abuse, and domestic violence.  Prevention for Empowerment will reach many more community residents through one-on-one contact, public service announcements, pamphlets and brochures.

Through alcohol, drugs and violence prevention education, the focus of the Prevention for Empowerment initiative will not only target prevention, but will also target two other distinct participant populations for corrective services: secondary and tertiary prevention. The initiative defines alcohol, drug and violence use prevention as “a process of problem identification, information analysis, meaningful education and strategy building.” This process is aimed at lowering the increased incidents of domestic violence caused by alcohol and drug use.

SERVICE ACTIVITIES

We noticed that when desirable cultural strengths are identified and properly cultivated, men and women develop a greater sense of stability, achievement and self worth.  Essentially, if we are to change behavior, we must alter our residents’ perceptions of themselves.  This will improve their collective self-esteem of their family and community.  Therefore, a major advantage of this socio-cultural, educational outreach model is to redirect this segment of our population’s negative concept, with strength to say “no” to drugs, violence, and alcohol.  The major models we employ are:

  • Comprehensiveness

  • Intensiveness

  • Community-based philosophy

Other services we provide are:

  • Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • HIV/AIDS Awareness/Education
  • Power Teen Program
  • DUI Evaluations/Risk Education/Early Intervention

  • CEDA Weatherization Program

  • Community-Oriented Activities

  • Employment Services
